Healthcare services can be confusing to navigate.
They can be even more confusing and overwhelming for people with learning disabilities and autistic people.
Believe in Us was a two-year project that took a radical new approach to redesigning health services with people with learning disabilities and autistic people.
The project took place within NHS Oxleas in the Royal Borough of Greenwich. Three groups of people with learning disabilities, autistic people and health and social care workers used the themes of connection, being heard and communication to steer work developing new ways of being and doing.
-
navigate - to find a path through something, to understand something
radical - something very different to anything that has come before it
steer - to decide what will happen
care plan journey - care plans say what kind of support someone needs to:
- stay as independent as possible
- do the things they enjoy
- manage their health conditions
The care plan journey is the way that the care plan is put together.

Connection
The Happy Mondays worked together to develop ways for healthcare workers, people with learning disabilities and autistic people to build meaningful, human relationships.
Being Heard
The Tuesday Group chose to work online. They shared experiences of health and social care services with each other, and wanted their words to be used for positive change.
Communication
The You and Me group wanted to improve the care plan journey by making it simpler for people to communicate their needs.
